The Majombolo Legacy:
From Mining Roots to National Pride
Nico United Football Club is a football team registered under the Botswana Football Association, based in Selebi-Phikwe. The club was founded in 1969 in the copper and nickel mining town under the name BCL Nico United Sporting Club, situated approximately 410 km north of the capital, Gaborone. The team’s traditional colours are emerald green and yellow.
Chasing Glory:
A History of Top-Flight Success
Majombolo, as the team is affectionately known by its legion of supporters, made its maiden appearance in the topflight league in 1992 and is currently competing in the elite Botswana Premier League. The club has also enjoyed success in domestic competitions, winning the FA Challenge Cup Lions Cup in 1986, 1987 and being later crowned champions of the 1998 St. Louis Cup.
A New Chapter:
Professionalism Meets Heritage
A seamless transition in late 2025 saw 99.99 Sports attain a majority stake in the club, resulting in the change of the team name to the now professionalised football club, while the heritage community retained minority shareholding. The consortium is led by renowned South African football administrator Floyd Mbele. This strategic transition has been characterised by professional collaboration and respect for the club’s legacy, including continued support for the sporting club’s Women’s and Youth teams. Majombolo play their home matches at the Selebi-Phikwe Stadium, a venue with a capacity of approximately 9,000 spectators, which serves as a focal point for local football and community support.
